Choosing the right kennel for your pet is extremely important. There are a variety of kennels that can simply seem like the right one, but there are certain things to be aware of.
- Bolts! Kennels can be overlooked very easily and sometimes we can confuse the different styles, as they appear to look very similar. Some come with latches and others with ceiling doors. Here’s a tip; if the cost is too good to be true, don’t buy it! Be sure to inspect it thoroughly to ensure they come with bolts.
- Metal Door – Metal doors are required for all kennels. Plastic doors are not acceptable.
- Ventilation – Kennels should have an opening on all four sides. If traveling internationally or if you are moving a short-nose breed pet, having ventilation on all sides is a requirement.
- Size – Getting the right size is crucial. Be sure that the pet is able to stand up comfortably and able to move around. Some airlines require at least a 4” clearance from the top of the pet’s head to the kennel’s ceiling (see chart below for different kennel sizes).
